Regas and leak detection, Pretoria East
A regas without a leak test is money wasted
Aircons do not use up gas. If yours is low, it is leaking, and a straight top up leaves through the same hole within weeks. We find the leak, fix it, then regas to spec.
Why the cheap regas is the expensive one
Plenty of operators will happily top up your gas for a few hundred rand less than a proper job. The gas escapes through the untouched leak, the unit fades again, and each time it runs low the compressor runs hotter. Compressors are the most expensive part of the unit, and low gas is what kills them. Paying once to find and fix the leak is the cheap option, it just does not look like it on the first quote.
How we do it properly
Pressure test. The system is pressurised with dry nitrogen. If it holds, the gas did not leak from the lines and we look further before spending your money.
Find and fix the leak. Electronic detection, and UV dye for the stubborn ones. The leak is repaired, not patched over.
Vacuum the lines. Moisture and air in the system corrode it from the inside. We pull a deep vacuum before any gas goes in.
Regas to spec. Weighed in to the manufacturer's exact charge, tested in every mode, with the paperwork to show what was done.
Switch it off if you see these
Running a unit low on gas cooks the compressor. If you spot any of these, switch the unit off and call us.
- Ice forming on the copper pipes or indoor coil
- A hissing or bubbling sound from the unit or pipes
- Cooling that fades the longer the unit runs
- The outdoor unit running almost non stop for weak results
What clients say
Two other companies just wanted to regas. Meridian tested first, found the leak at a flare joint and fixed it. A year later the unit is still ice cold, so the gas is clearly staying in.
Honest from the first phone call. They explained why a plain top up would be wasted money, found the leak with dye and showed it to me before repairing it.

Regas questions
Never, if the system is sealed properly. Refrigerant circulates in a closed loop and does not get used up. If your unit is low on gas, the gas went somewhere, and that somewhere is a leak.
Ice on the pipes or indoor coil, a hissing sound, weak cooling that slowly gets worse, and the unit running longer for the same result. Any of these is worth a callout before the compressor is damaged.
Because the new gas leaves through the same leak, usually within weeks, and you pay twice. Running a unit low on gas also overheats the compressor, which is the most expensive part to replace. Finding the leak first is cheaper every time.
We pressure test the system with nitrogen and trace the leak with an electronic detector, using UV dye for the stubborn ones. Once it is found and repaired, we vacuum the lines and regas to the manufacturer's exact specification.
Yes. In South Africa refrigerant may only be handled by SAQCC Gas registered practitioners, and recovered gas must be reclaimed, not vented. All our technicians are registered, and you get the paperwork to prove it.
